Flowers not Delivered. shopping.indiatimes.com provided bad service.

It was my wife's birthday and I decided to gift Fresh Flowers. Googling gave a lot of options to deliver fresh flowers. Many websites popped up and so brought up confusion. Google also have the solution for this dilemma. A quick check of "ranking" of websites helped to find out bigger players in this business. But the bigger players only provided services in big cities. A simple option to enter Postal Pincode, showed reach of companies and my city was not covered by so called big players.

One of the website was quick to start online chat. As soon as I opened the website, executive initiated chat, asking for preferences and suggestions. I finalized the flowers and started to process the order but Paypal could not complete the transaction. A thought came in my mind to do a quick check for credibility of website. A simple query on google resulted in many reviews and feedback written by customers. Website did not delivered package many times or delivered wrong package. Feedback mentioned that Customer Care executive were not so supportive and emails and phones got unanswered for complaints. I put question about this behavior to the Chat executive and she closed the chat and disappeared. I thanked god for saving me from crooks.

I continued my search and found that shopping.indiatimes.com have options to deliver flowers at my city location. Indiatimes is a reliable name in market so I thought that there is no need to do further probe of the credibility. I selected the flowers and put the order and date of delivery. My imagination showed me prospective happiness on my wife's face.

Flowers were not delivered on expected date. I send a query to know the status of my package which was not answered. After three days there was an update that package has been dispatched and consignment number will be issued soon. It was disappointing to see such a late dispatch of package. Anyways, I do not have options but to wait. Website showed that package was delivered next day but no such delivery happened. I raised the issue of non delivery and asked for refund of my money. Website registered the issue, apologized for non- delivery and informed that they will arrange delivery. I pushed for refund and they refunded me the entire amount after more than a month.

Here is chronology of events:

November 19: Order Date
November 20: Expected Order Delivery Date
November 24: "Order Delivered" But no such delivery happened
November 26: Case Opened
December 6: "Case Resolution Date" but no such resolution happened
December 27: Money returned and Case Closed

Customer Service Rating: Lack of proper communication with customer. No proper feedback mechanism. Overall the rating is "poor"

They returned my money after a long followup so they are honest in money terms.Attached are my order details:

Indian Food in Bolivia

Indian Food in Bolivia

There are Indian Restaurants in Bolivia. I was craving to eat Indian food and found the destinations in Santa Cruz and La Paz. The Name of restaurants in both city was Taj Mahal, coincidentally!! The owners were different, one was owned by Sindhi Businessman and other by Punjabis.

I am a Vegetarian so my experience is about Vegetarian Food only.

Santa Cruz: Taj Mahal Restaurant

Only two Vegetarian options in Main Coarse and I tried both of them. Food was delicious but have to tell them to keep oil low while frying.

Location: Near CineCenter, On the road Connecting Las Americas and Cine Center.
Ambience is good. Many options for Non Veg lovers
Must Try: Kulfi in dessert

La Paz:Taj Mahal Restaurant

Typical Punjabi restaurant with  Punjabi flavor. Also have South Indian options in Menu. Many Veg and Non-Veg options.

I ordered Dosa once,  it took lot of time to cook and that too had Punjabi Taste. I decided struck to their specialties next time. Punjabi Dal Makhani is delicious, Mutter Paneer is yummy, Bangan Bharta, Alu Paranthas, Chapatis and Nan makes you feel like home.

Location: San Miguel, Sur de La Paz
Ambience is good. Many Veg and Non Veg options
Must Try: Mango Lassi

Accommodation in Ajman, UAE

Accommodation in UAE: An Experience of Living in Ajman/Sharjah in year 2008/2009

Finding Accommodations and Getting Driving License makes life difficult in UAE. I lived in Ajman/Sharjah for two years in four different accommodations. I was a bachelor working as Engineer in a Company.
Property agents preached these rules to us for Bachelor accommodations:-

i) Bachelors are not allowed to live in Society marked for Families and there is no Bachelors Accommodations in decent locations
ii) Bachelors can live in Industrial Areas which face frequent Electricity/Water supply Issues
iii) Contracts between Builder and Tenant will be authorized by  Municipality; without authorization it is not a valid contract. There is no Taxes in UAE but this authorization costs 5% of yearly Rental value, which is huge sum. More than the tax, I paid in my home country.

We were four bachelors working together in the same company. We found a 2BHK accommodation  and Builder committed us to get authorization from Municipality. It was before the recession hit the World Economy so Rents were very high. We agreed for a AED 46k yearly for that apartment, which included the overhead costs of cleaning etc. Builder charged us the 5% of this amount for authorization. But to our surprise that authorization never happened. Rent is charged Quarterly in UAE. Tenant will pay the security, four post dated Bank Cheque to Builder for a years payment. Any cheque bounce is crime, same as other countries so once the agreement is signed it is difficult to come out of it. My friends told me that the security deposit is rarely paid back by builder.

In seventh month the builder informed us that Municipality is not authorizing the contract and there is a crackdown happening on bachelors living in these building so we have to vacate and move to other place. Later we understood that it is a kind of game that builders play. There was no such crackdown happening but real thing was that, Rent has increased and Builder was able to get more money for that apartment and in absence of contract we have nowhere to complain.

We found another apartment but more expensive than previous. We moved in new apartment and after three months, we can feel the impact of Recession. Rent prices had reduced, many peoples have left there cars on Airport parking and fled with their family. But damage had done to us, we do not have options to switch.

After these bitter experiences, I understood that it is better to find the sharing apartments on Monthly basis rather than sign a Contract with Builder.

Indians in Mexico

Indians in Mexico (Views Expressed are personal)

Mexico,The New Land of Opportunity:

Mexico is turning in "Land of opportunity".  Mexico city is a home for a large Expat population. I got an opportunity to work for a Telecom company in Mexico.

Preparing for Visa:

Getting Mexican Visa is a lengthy procedure for Indians. Mexico is too far from India and there are no direct flights. Connecting flights are from Europe and USA. Which requires Transit Visa But Amsterdam allows transit without applying for a Visa. KLM airline via Amsterdam is easy but expensive option for Indians who do not have USA transit visa

People applying for Mexican visa need to appear in person before consular authority. Many Indians use Mexico as a transit route to infiltrate in USA. So Candidates are interrogated for Financial Background and Reasons to Visit Mexico to check for genuine travelers. Mexico is a Top Tourist Destinations in world but not for Indians. Indians do not travel to Mexico as a Tourist unless they are based in USA.

My employer arranged for Permission to work in Mexico. I visited Mexican Embassy, New Delhi for stamping of Entry Visa. The list of required documents is large and you must have all documents in order to get approval. Here is the list as was pasted outside embassy in 2013. Visit the Embassy page at http://embamex.sre.gob.mx/india/index.php/en/consular-section/visas to check current requirements. If everything fine, Entry Visa is processed same day. Work Permit will be processed after arriving in Mexico.

Mexican Business Visa Requirements as printed outside Mexican Embassy, New Delhi  in 2013
Procedure for Spouse Visa are complex. My wife was denied tourist visa and consular office was reluctant to provide reason of rejection. After a lot of search and communication with fellow Indian Expats in Mexico, I got to know that Spouse's dependent visa process will be initiated at Instituto Nacional de Migración (INM), Mexico City. Presidential Elections were held in Mexico and Government was about to change. A very unfortunate thing is that New Government (If different political party gains power) replaces almost all the working staff of Govt. departments. New staff took time to get habitual and clear the accumulated backlog. Elections are held once in six years and unfortunately we had to bear the unnecessary delay in immigration dept. Usually process takes two to three months but in my case it was a little longer.

Spouse Visa Requirements:Lawyer prepares file with relevant documents to present it to INM. Candidates will provide Original Marriage Certificate. Marriage certificate will be translated into Spanish by a authorized Translation Institute in Mexico. INM will issue a authorization letter for candidate. Spouse will submit file with relevant documents to Mexican Embassy in respective country. Here is a list of documents for stamping entry visa.
  1. Application form duly filled
  2. Authorization Letter from INM
  3. Passport with at least six month validity
  4. A recent passport-sized photograph (4.5 CM X 3.5 CM) with white background
  5. Covering letter given by your organization and duly signed by the competent authority
  6. A request Letter from spouse
  7. Copy of Personal Bank Statement (last 6 months)-"Copy of Mexico's Bank account" and spouse's bank statement of last six months.
  8. Your Passport's Copy
  9. Copy of All Visa's of all countries you had visited
  10. Your FM3's Copy
  11. Your Employment  Certificate from company
  12. Flight booking-"Tentative Flight Booking"
  13. Visa fee-currency notes of "100" are accepted only
Visa was stamped in the same day.

Life in Mexico:
There were few Indians in Mexico in 2011 when I reached there, but numbers were growing steadily. I heard from a friend that social celebrations like Birthday and anniversary have shifted from home to outdoor big halls. Most Indians were in traditional Textile business in Mexico City but expansion Indian companies brought Techies to Mexico. Many Indian IT and Pharma companies have setup business units in Mexico. Telecom companies bring cheap Indian manpower to work on short term projects.

Indian Women Association of Mexico is a Indian Community Association, they usually brings Indian community together to celebrate festivals. Embassy of India opened Indain Cultural Centre called Gurudev Tagore Indian Cultural Centre. The Cultural Centre offers classes in Yoga, Indian classical dance forms, instrumental music of Sitar, Hindi and Sanskrit, besides Indian cuisine, which are hugely popular. I met many Mexican peoples who had interest in Yoga, mediation and Indian food. There is a Temple, Gurudwara and a Mosque. There were four restaurants providing Indian Food named Dawat, Indian Town, Tandoor and Taj Mahal. Indian groceries are available but expensive.

Safety is of high concern when it is about living in a big city. All metropolitan cities of world have similar stories on providing safe living to peoples. People need to keep vigil and to take precautions while living in Mexico City.

Visa processing after Reaching Bolivia

Bolivian Embassy provides Entry Visa to Bolivia which is valid for One month. If person want to stay more and work, then Visa process should be started within 30 days of arrival in Bolivia. After Visa stamping the last process is to apply for Cedula de Extrangeros which is a Bolivian ID card. Again, a File has to be prepared, documents to be filled. Police Clearance Certificate (PCC), Haryana

Police Clearance Certificate (PCC), Haryana

PCC can be obtained from Passport office and District Police Office. PCC requirements from Embassy does not mention the source of Certificate. So I believe it is up to applicant to decide which PCC they want to use. PCC from passport office is easy and procedure is similar to applying for a Passport.

I decided to apply for PCC at local Police Office for ease of process and cost involved. But later I found out that it was not so easy. There are two kinds of PCC one with Photo and other without Photo. The cost difference between two is Rs 300. Certificate with Photo costs 500 Rs while other was for 200 Rs. District's Police Office or SP- Office issues PCC certificates.

I did not knew that a file has to be prepared with many documents in it. I approached to Agent to help me to prepare the file. Here are the documents list.

i) Application Form (Sample is attached)
ii) Affidavit on Rs. 10 stamp paper mentioning Address, Passport Details, DOB, character and country of visit
iii) Two Address proofs duly attested by Notary
iv) OCF (Online Challan form) for payment proof. Payment to be submitted at State Bank of India, Branch

Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) Sample Form

Affidavit and OCF cost me Rs 200. Agents in complex overcharged me for two documents. This kid of loot happens when procedures are not clearly mentioned.

I submitted the form, same day after payment. Officer told me to wait till an inquiry team from Concerned office will contact me for verification.

An Officer from Local Police Station called me for verification. They need two neighbors for address verification. My neighbors helped me out in this situation. Officer completed file and sent back to Security Branch office.

Security Branch issued me Certificate in next morning. Whole process tool 5 working days to complete.

Authorization of PCC for International Visa Process

Authorization means stamping of PCC by relevant authorities to get it accepted by International Agencies like Embassies or InterPol. The first process is to get a forwarding letter by district SDM. Here are the steps.

i) Application Request to SDM office for Forwarding Letter
ii) Initial Check by Dealing Clerk.
iii) Re Authentication from Issuing Department (Security Branch of SP Office)
iv) Stamping and Signature by SDM

It is a two day process. SDM office will issue a letter to Home Department to validate the Certificate.

In my case it was Haryana Secretariat office in Chandigarh. It is better to reach early to Secretariat. If everything goes fine, officers are available, document can be authenticate the same day. "Under Secretary to Home Department" is given responsibility to sign the documents.

Last process is, authorization from MEA. Details of process are given at below mentioned link.

For any questions or issues, please feel free to comment. I hope the blog is helpful to peoples.

Yellow Fever Vaccination, New Delhi

Yellow Fever Vaccination, New Delhi

I goggled for Yellow Fever Centers in New Delhi and found six centers providing service of vaccination. My friend suggested me to go to MCD Laboratory, Civil Lines, which is close to ISBT, Kashmiri Gate.

Things looked smooth but there are lot of humps in process. The address of place is confusing. People working opposite the office does not know whereabouts of Vaccination center. I wandered for one hour in the area, passed two times front of it but could not locate it. Town hall is in Chandni Chowk. I do not know how come Town Hall appeared in Address of this center. Name of Alipur Road has changed to Sham Nath marg. Correct and easily approachable Address of place is "Opposite to Gate no. 3 of Vidhansabha metro Station"

The timings mentioned for vaccination was 10:00 AM to 12:00. But Registration should be done at 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM. People reaching there at 11:00 AM were refused for vaccination; and they argued with Doctor for reaching there within prescribed timings. One vaccine is used for five peoples and cost per person is Rs 300. They would not consider you until a batch of five is complete even if you reach there before 10:30 AM. But usually there are loopholes in process in India, it also exists here. If a batch of five is not complete then vaccination could be done but.... I left the phrase for your guess. The Registration thing is not mentioned anywhere on internet. I called to International Inoculation Center, Mandir Marg; they also said the same thing. The Timings for Vaccination at Mandir Marg is 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM but registration start at 9:00 AM and Vaccination is done for first 45 candidates. Anyways I crossed all humps and got the vaccination done for me.

A Night at Gurudwara Paonta Sahib

A Night at Gurudwara Paonta Sahib

I heard about Paonta Sahib when I was travelling to Hemkund Sahib. I read about history of Gurudwara on internet, checked location map and routes to reach there. The desire to visit the shrine had grown up and the day came after two and half years later.

Paonta Sahib is in Himachal Pradesh on bank of river Yamuna. Other Side of river is another North Indian State of Uttrakhand.  Bus plying on Chandigarh-Dehradun route passes by Paonta Sahib. It took three hours for State Roadways bus from Sector 43, Chandigarh to reach to Paonta Sahib.  The bus crawled from crowded lanes of Tri-Cities, flew on planes of Haryana,  and lastly; moved quietly on foothills of Himalaya. I was travelling first time on this route. Green forests of Himalaya on both sides of road created mesmerizing feelings. Winter has started, temperature were reducing but day was still pleasant. Heat of sunlight produced warmth in human body.

Magnificent Gurudwara situated on bank of River Yamuna. Building was large enough to accommodate hundreds of pilgrims. I cleaned my hands, face and went for pray in Darbar. Picturesque view of flowing river was beautiful. Food at Langar hall was delicious. Prasada ( Wheat flour Chapatti) served with daal (lentils) , pickle, chai and dessert halwa was yummy and nutritious. I registered for night stay in Gurudwara. Sleeping hall had 12 beds with neat and clean blankets. Six were occupied for that night. My companions came from different parts of India. We talked for some time, shared our experience of journey to other famous Gurudwaras. I slept while listening to other guys. Journey was not so long but it was tiring and I felt low on energy.

I woke up early in Morning. Completed Nitya Karmas, took bath in cold waters, got ready and went for morning prayer in Darbar. Sun was arising and I wanted to welcome the day.  I clicked photos of River, Sun and Gurudwara. Sun arising from Himalayas, Steady flowing water of Yamuna and White carpet like fog; it was charming, beautiful and pleasant view.

Rising Sun. View from Gurudwara Paonta Sahib

River Yamuna, Himalaya Foothills and floating fog in a Morning of December at Gurudwara Paonta Sahib

Gurudwara has historical and spiritual significance of linkage with tenth Guru. Guru Gobind Ji had lived there and compiled verses of Granth Sahib. History written on stone, a museum describing the history of Sikh religion and weapons of Guruji described the importance of place. Kavi Darbar a venue to hold poetry competitions was in backyard of Gurudwara. A temple dedicated to Yamuna Devi showed devotion to river, which brings life to place.

Stairs in backyard lead to Yamuna Ghat but gate was closed. Entry from inside was not allowed. I used outer path to reach the Yamuna Ghat. A board displayed there mentioned, how unsafe was to take a dip in river. Number of people drowned in that particular place were written yearly. I paid my devotion to temple there. I had my Brunch in langar hall, bought few books and departed for Chandigarh.

Travel Guide: Bus from ISBT, Kashmere Gate depart for Paonta Sahib. Bus from Chandigarh to Dehradun pass from City. Buses from Ambala or Yamunanagr also departs for Paonta Sahib.

Nearest Places: Gurudwara Bhangnani Sahib

Karbonn Titanium S2 and Flipkart

A Timeline of my Karbonn Titanium S2. "Bought and Returned to Flipkart"

I wanted to buy a Smartphone. Smart, cheap, and a good phone. After spending a lot of time on reading about smart phone, I decided to try Karbonn Titanium S2.

October 22, 2013: I was happy. My order for Karbonn Titanium S2 was delivered. Phone was little heavy but it looked nice. Initially it looked a good deal in Rs 7500.

December 7, 2013: I was sad. My phone was not working. Display went off and it did not blinked. I returned phone to service center and they send it to New Delhi for repair.

Service Center was not so friendly. I had to visit them a no. of times to get a positive response. At last, after 77 days, I received something from them.

February 22, 2014: Service Center packed my phone back in the case, sealed it and returned to me. They told me to give it back to the seller. They also issued a confirmation sheet named DOA, mentioning all details of fault.

Next 15 days proved to be tougher than expected. I sent an email to Flipkart with all details. They called me after two days. Customer Care officer told me that as initial "30 Days" has passed so Flipkart can not replace handset. They advised me to contact a Karbonn Store. I did home work on internet to find official store of Karbonn but there was none. Local store in my city refused to replace the phone as it was not sold by them. I felt cheated and harassed. Flipkart must have known all these things. Anyways, I sent another email to Flipkart explaining the situation.

March 7, 2014: Flipkart called me and agreed to return of device. They arranged the pickup of box and returned my money in Flipkart wallet. I was happy again.

I received another email from Flipkart about the review, I wrote about product. I had mentioned about the ordeal that happened with me on Product Review Page. They asked me to remove content about service of Karbonn and Flipkart. I changed the review otherwise they would have removed it.

I was in dilemma again. Which handset to buy? I have to buy it from Flipkart as money was not returned in cash.

First Experience of Document Attestation in India. Touts, Frauds and Fake Stamps.

Touts, Frauds and Fake Stamps

Moving abroad is always charming but documentation is extremely boring. Let us start the timeline when I was moving to Middle East for my first foreign assignment.

January 2008: It was final. I was moving abroad. Interview had gone well and I was selected. Employer had sent a email with a long list of documents. They need my duly attested educational certificates to be submitted at earliest. I have no idea of attestation procedures but help poured in and one of my friend who had gone through all these procedures, made things simple. With contact details, I reached Patiala House court in Central Delhi. The moment, I stepped out of Auto; touts stormed in. It took me five minutes to find the guy and in those five minutes tens of touts had made their service proposals.

My Graduation Degree was from state of Haryana. New procedures mandated certificates be attested in State Capitals and then by Ministry of External Affairs. Tout; Mr. Bunty explained that it will cost INR 3500. His men will take documents to Chandigarh for State HRD attestation and then another attestation will be done from MEA, New Delhi. I accepted his proposals. It was not possible for me to take a leave from office and visit Chandigarh. I will regret this decision of mine after three years. He told me that if I want to do all procedures myself, official fees is INR 3000. I believed him, do not know why!! and agreed for the deal.

Five days after, I was there again for collection of documents. I checked the Stamps, the first one was fake. The Date of first attestation was before than I had submitted the documents to him. But damage had been done. Other stamp which was based on first, looked genuine. He guaranteed that there will not be any issue. And if something happens, he will take responsibility. Embassy authenticated the second stamp only which looked genuine and I moved abroad.

September 2011:  I was there again in same Patiala House Complex after three and half years. Clock has moved a lot but touts were still there. I was moving to North America and Embassy told me to get the different attestations because the old ones, did not applicable to Hague Convention countries. Bunty was not there. His phone was not answering. I inquired and people told me that he had changed his profession. Other touts offered help but I decided to do things myself. INR 55 was charge for attestation; It was surprising. Examiner told me that HRD, Haryana was fake. I insisted, it is real. He said that they will verify the stamps and if it was found to be fake they will keep the certificate with them. I stepped back, took the certificate, came out and asked to touts. They offered a deal in INR 2000. But this time, I decided to correct the mistakes.

Only option was to get a New Graduation Certificate. I went to university, put up the request. Got issued new certificate and  went to HRD, Panchkula. They issued a letter to university for verification. I carried letter myself, took their reply to Panchkula office and got my Certificate attested in INR 55 only. I had paid INR 3500 for same stamps before. Next day, I went to MEA, New Delhi and got my certificate stamped till evening. It was hectic, took ten days but everything was corrected and I sighed in relief.
